    Dear Wam Members,

If you are from the southwest metro area, please consider partnering with us for one or more of these events.  We provide loaner equipment, bait and instruction to everyone who shows up.  All events are approximately 4 hours long with setup at 9AM and teardown between 1 & 2PM.  If a couple of your members would be able to show up, with any placards, posters pamphlets etc. at an event, we would publicize that both ahead of time and after the fact in local media.

    • We realize that WAM's tournament is the first Saturday of June every year, some cannot participate in the Family Fishing Academy directly.
    • If there are members not going to the tournament, we would welcome them at our event!
    • We will once again have a stack of your brochures at one of the tables for adults.
    • We are happy to include any photos, placards etc. you wish to loan us as well.\
    • In the afternoon is free family fishing at the Fireman’s Pond next to the Event Center.
    • Part of the DNR FIN program, we partner with the DNR to provide all equipment, bait and instruction for anyone to try fishing in the pond,
    • The pond is teeming with sunfish and also has some largemouth bass and even a northern or two.  Nobody ever gets skunked.
    • We try to get adults as well as youngsters to participate.
    • To help encourage adults to join in, fishing licenses are NOT required during the event.

    2019 FAMILY FISHING DAYS

(shore fishing at three locations in Carver County)

    • June 29th at Lake Ann Park – Chanhassen
    • August 10th at Riverpointe Pond - Watertown

REVIEW OF 2018 Chaska Area Fishing With Friends “Take A Kid Fishing” clinic:

    • It was the largest to date with 61 youngsters ages 6 to 12 participating and receiving their free rod, reel and swag bag.
    • As always, every young participant also was able to sign up for a fishing outing on our pontoon on Lake Minnetonka – we gave 8 dedicated trips for them (we can handle a maximum of 10 young quests per trip).
    • It was the second time the Carver County Library joined with our volunteers to offer an activities and story corner for younger children.
    • They were engaged and entertained for the whole morning.
    • For the first time we also had exhibits and discussions for adults concurrent with the youngster’s program.  We were amazed at the response – our volunteers were busy the whole morning leading discussions, answering questions and giving demonstrations to parents who had brought their children to the clinic.
    • Of course there is always milk, juice, coffee and treats for all too.

See the following pictures of the days events!

Another new innovation for 2018 was the boat rental discount coupon.

The operator of the marina we use was pleased to allow us to give one of these coupons to each participant.

WAM  brochures were prominently displayed at one of the tables for parents

Adults conversing and learning at Adult Skills table

The MN DNR has participated for several years.  They gave a general welcome,

followed by lively discussion of fishing adventures.

Always a fun time, the presentation on baits and lures by the owner of local outdoor sports store draws rapt attention.

He also sets up a table with examples of fishing equipment, lures and especially live bait. There always are a number of kids who want to handle the bait, and he tells us that every yeara number of leeches “disappear” during the clinic.

Doubt those leeches are appreciated when they show up in a pants pocket or the laundry.

A feature of every clinic are what we call “skill tables.”

The participants are split into smaller groups who then circulate. Each group spends about 15 minutes at each table, watching, touching and learning.  Here is photo at the fish identification table and another learning knot tying by doing.

Hello Women Anglers of MN members,

I wanted to reach out to you to see if you would be available/interested in joining L.L.Bean and the FWS for a learn to fish all day event at the National Wildlife Refuge in Bloomington on July 20 this summer.

If you are able to we would love to have a 30 minute guest speaker presentation on your organization at the refuge in the morning and space for a table with some fishing instructors in the afternoon by the Bass Ponds. I was connected with you through my contact at Girl Scouts River Valleys who I am also working with on this event and I would love to get you involved. We will also be tying this in with Hispanic Conservation week.

      I hope you join us!

      Sincerely,

      Grant Fleetwood

Ever want to fish Mille Lacs for walleye but don't have a boat or don't know how?  Even if you know exactly how to fish the big lake, here's your chance to go out with experienced captains and 24 of your WAM sister's.  This year WAM has hired two launches to take us out of Appeldoorns Sunset Bay Resort!  The date of the launch this year is July 27th.  The boats will leave at 5:30 pm and be back at about 9:30 pm.   Be there with plenty of time so the boats can take off right on time!
For those who would like to bring their own fishing gear please feel free to do so.   If your not sure what to bring Appeldoorns will be providing gear for anyone who needs it.  The launch Captains will have bait on board.  The resort will be using the type of bait that has been working the best at the time.  It could be leeches, crawlers or minnows.  So don't worry about bait because it will be on board for you.  Feel free to call the resort close to the date and ask what they have been using and for those who like a backup plan you can always bring something else to try.
There will be seating on board for everyone. The launch will provide bottled water but no other food. The launch boat will have a grill ready for use for anyone who would like to bring food to make!  So bring your cooler with your own drinks and food.  However, remember no alcohol is allowed at WAM events.
For those who are thinking about making it a weekend trip Appeldoorns will provide a 15% discount on a 2 night stay (2 night minimum).  Just tell them when/if you make a reservation that you are with WAM. You can inquire the day of the launch to see if they have rooms for one night but if you are making a reservation ahead of time it will need to be a 2 night minimum stay.
Ladies it's going to be a fun evening so I hope you come and join us out on the lake.

      WAMILY DAY 2019

Where: Bluff Valley Campground 61297 390th Ave, Zumbro Falls, MN 55991

      Date: August 3rd, 2019

      Time: 10am-8pm

Food: Potluck! Just bring your favorite potluck dish, and we will all be surprised at what shows up and hopefully not leave hungry! :)

      WHY Bluff Valley?!

The social team is looking at this campground as a potential future site to turn WAMILY DAY into WAMILY WEEKEND next year! Unfortunately this year the camp sites are already completely booked. But, if we go and we like, the owners will work with us on discounts and bookings for next year!

WHAT WILL THERE BE TO DO?

WAMILY DAY is designed and intended to allow WAM members and families to meet other WAM members and families and make new connections while spending the day with each other. While the adults might want to "socialize" and the kids might want to "play" there will be plenty for everyone to take part in! We have listed below some of the available activities at Bluff Valley Campground.

Inner Tubing/Kayaking: We will take a scheduled float (or you can kayak) down the lazy Zumbro River. They will haul our gear and shuttle us!

Swimming Pool: Take a dip in the swimming pool!

Indoor Park: 8000 Square Foot Indoor Skatepark for bikes and skateboards and a rock climbing wall too!

Playground: Let the kids burn off some energy at the playground

Driving Range: Take a wack at the 250 yard driving range

Disc Golf: Enjoy the disc golf course.

Ceramic Studio: Let the artist inside come out at the Ceramic Studio

Fishing & Hiking: Enjoy miles of hiking trails and fishing spots

Potluck Lunch/Dinner: Everyone will bring a potluck dish to share for lunch/dinner. We aren't even having anyone sign up for food, as the joy and thrill in a potluck is the surprise of what shows up to feed you!

AIR CONDITIONED HALL! We will have the use of an air conditioned hall, with doors we can close to keep the flies/mosquitoes out. This is especially welcoming for those that can't handle sitting in the hot sun the entire day! OR, if it should rain we will have shelter and can do alternative indoor activities we will bring with us just in case!

$15 Ceramic Painting: This is the only thing you will have to pay for at this event, and only if you choose to participate. At registration we will ask if you want to paint a ceramic, and if so then you will pay at that time the $15 for the ceramic and one will be ordered for you. This is a completely optional activity!

YOU GET TO ENJOY ALL OF THESE FOR FREE!

When you arrive, you and everyone with you will receive a special WAM provided armband so the owners/staff can tell at a glance you are with WAM. You WILL have to sign waivers for risky activities like the Skatepark and tubing as neither WAM nor Bluff Valley will be responsible for injuries.

      Letter from Organizer:

      Dear WAM Members,

I represent Youth Outdoor Activity Day which occurs on August 25th this year. This event has grown immensely over the 5 years we have had it. After reading about your organization, I think this might be a great way for you to interact with women who want to get into fishing but lack the opportunities and abilities to know how to do it.

Some key points about our event:

      • The event is completely free in every way.
      • 2018 we had 2,212 kids (over 3,500 total) attend the event that featured over 45 different hands-on activities.
      • We are trying to get more families involved (particularly moms!) and have a couple of different things to encourage adult participation with their kids.
      • Our YouTube Video
      • Attached is a presentation about the event

        Dear Wam Members,

Four years ago I started a wilderness program with my kindergarten class called, “Wilderness Wednesdays.” For the entire day on Wednesdays I take two classrooms of students outside in our school forest/creek area and teach them science, math, and language arts standards along with nature education.

I’ve been able to connect with a lot of great organizations to bring experts out to the forest with us: MN Tracking Club, our local Watershed District, MN Tracker’s Association, Keystone Elk Country Alliance to name a few.  One of the big areas that I’m missing is fishing.  As an avid angler – I want these kids involved in fishing.

My hope is that some of you would consider coming to our school to work with the children and help me get them interested in fishing by teaching them what they need to know.

        Thank you,

We need a minimum of 2 volunteers to provide a fun activity for children teaching them about angling and to share information with parents about your organization and how to encourage their children to get out and enjoy the great outdoors by angling.

The purpose of our event is to educate families about the great outdoors and their families place in it. We have over 30 event partners every year join us to encourage learning through activity and showing how easy it is to “Get Out and Grow”

Every year we have over 1000 children and families attend our completely free event to learn about the great outdoors and their families place in it. We encourage learning thought activity and have a variety of partners join us to provide fun activities that encourage children and their families getting out and growing in the great outdoors.

We are hoping Women Anglers of MN would be interested in coming out and participating in our event. We have had other for profit fishing organizations come out in the past and are making an effort to include organizations that align more closely with our own mission and think you all may be a great fit. Participating in the event is free  and you are able to share information with guests about your organization.

We only ask that you provide a fun interactive activity for children which has included in the past bringing out a boat that children can touch, see and feel, or short casting lessons, or could include making your own lure or fishing pole etc. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you think this may be something that your organization is interested in.

We look forward to the possibility of you joining us.
